Gaming experiences, much like television watching experiences, can become so much more with second screen. Gaming entertainment can be enriched by using additional handheld devices that act as a secondary screen app. Rather than distracting the player from the experience, second screen apps complement it by providing additional features and interactivity. Although second screen gaming is not exactly mainstream right now, we have reasons to believe that the beginning of some of the most immersive gaming experiences of all time is here.
In late 2012, Microsoft released Xbox SmartGlass. Truly, an innovation in gaming and a something-to-be-excited-about for all those who love a good gaming experience, the Xbox SmartGlass acts as a companion application that controls the whole playing experience. The app turns mobile phones or tablets, even a computer, into an additional screen for the TV, enabling communication between the devices and making it easier for people to enjoy playing a game or engaging in other experiences, such as watching TV shows, music, sport events etc. The Xbox SmartGlass gets more out of the console and transforms everything into a multi-screen gaming experience, which is what second screen apps are meant to do in the first place.
Plants Vs Zombies: Garden Warfare
… is the third game in the multiplayer Plants vs. Zombies video game series. Part of this game is Boss Mode, a playable class that is different from any other class in the game. This unique mode allows a third friend to join in the game by using the application. In Boss Mode, the third character surveys the battlefield and gives the player a completely new perspective on the location of each player, enabling such actions as securing certain areas and taking down characters. The experience brought by the application builds on the dynamic of the game and makes everything much more interesting.
SwitchBlade User Interface
… is an awarded interface powered by PC manufacturer Razer, which enables more control over gaming experiences through an incorporated touch-screen device. The players have this fully configurable touch screen that that they can use as a secondary display when playing, and it is integrated into the computer and keyboard. In addition to the touch screen, the interface also has 10 tactile buttons that serve to access information or to customize.
Devices with SwitchBlade User Interface include a number of applications, but gamers can also access the Application Manager to download others: applications that enhance the game, applications specific to gaming, social media apps etc.
And this is just the infancy of what will most likely grow to become the new direction in the gaming world. Second-screen powered gaming experiences will further develop to create a richer environment for players.
