The Age of Mobile Has Reached New Heights In Romania: 2014 Stats

Appscend Team

If there’s one thing that Internet users have learned to love in the past couple of years it’s the magic of mobile devices. The digital marketing agency Today’s has recently performed an analysis over mobile devices and digital gadgets and their deployment on the Romanian market, and this is what they’ve revealed to the public eye.

According to Today’s, 2014 has been a great year for the portable digital device. Throughout last year, Romanians have purchased a total of:

  • 7.5 million smartphones
  • 22.6 million SIM cards
  • 9.3 million Telekom plans

Also in 2014, Romanian users have been “toying” with an average of 1.7 gadgets per capita, whereas in 2012 the average Internet user disposed of one gadget and in 2013 – 1.6 gadgets.

As expected, smartphones reign over any other digital device for now, which consequently has led to an increase in mobile traffic on Facebook. In figures, this means a total of 2.5 million active users, with a whopping 39% increase in the past couple of months.

The total of Facebook users, both mobile and desktop, rises up to an approximate 7.2 million. No wonder, since my friend’s grandma has a Facebook account since last July!

However, Facebook is not the only digital sweetheart of the Romanian Internet user. Here are the other major players in the mobile field:

  • Twitter – an average of 26.000 active users
  • Instagram – 160.000 accounts with 40.000 active users
  • The king of the crowd – LinkedIn, with an average of 1.5 million accounts, placing us in the top 40 most prominent LinkedIn users in the world.

So What’s In It For 2015?

Experts’ predictions are quite sound and logical: this year we are prone to experiencing an increase in mobile usage of about 52.1% by the end of June, according to the National Authority for Management and Regulation in Communications (ANCOM). Seeing that the first 6 months of 2014 have brought an increase in mobile device usage of over 28%, these predictions do not seem far fetched at all.

The only issue here is that online shops don’t seem quite ready for the burst. Mobile is the future, as we very well know, and online shops should and need to adapt to the user’s necessities. It is not only about investing in a smart and functional mobile version, but also about optimisation and constant maintenance, as Today’s points out. The trends are rapidly shifting and who should be on top of online marketing trends if not online shops themselves, we ask.

Today’s general director, Marius Lăzărescu, also notes that the most interested parties in mobile apps, along with online shops, should be restaurants and hotels. In a nutshell, any business that stands on recurrent purchase/use of services should own a perfectly functional and appealing mobile app or mobile version of the website.
