As I was browsing on the official Samsung Facebook page these days, I ran over their how-to presentation video for their two new releases, the Galaxy Note 3 and its companion device, Galaxy Gear. As I lay there in awe, I was already planning how to get my hands on the two beauties by cutting down on how much I spend on food and being social. My mind, invaded by the specters of a beautiful hi-tech life, inevitably flew to my other technological, still highly unaccessible fantasy. The one and only. Google Glass.
Beyond my armchair nostalgia, I got thinking of how these new electronic babies will change the face, as well as the requirements of app development. Google has already posted a guide for potential developers, welcoming them to experiment and expand the Glass project, while advising them to maintain the concepts of personalization, privacy, up-to-dateness and flawless functioning.
This basically means that Google aims at taking Glass to the next level of the user – device experience. Actually, it really makes me think of owning a portable, multi-functional, super-evolved limb, which might sound creepy and unorthodox. Still, call me a futuristic freak, I crave it. Ah, one new gizmo for humanity, one step closer to becoming a Batman-like creature for the likes of me.
Thus, Google has posted guidelines for developing timeline, menu, subscription, location, contacts and authorization apps and features. They seem to put utility and simplicity on the top of their list, and always remind of the context in which Glass will and should be used, as well as the physical parameters which need to enter the developers’ equations. See their brief guidance clip here:
Samsung’s Galaxy Gear, although designed and used in a different manner, also gives way for new opportunities in the realm of app development. It has already gone social by the implementation of Path, and lifestyle and fitness apps and ideas are going viral on the Internet. Not only does this mean that the market will benefit from a huge leap in originality, but it gives developers the opportunity to get funky and creative. It seems like the horizon of a new era has come to our sight.
The amount of enthusiasm around these innovative gadgets is impressive. Developers and tech lovers around the world stand together, awaiting for the advancement, popularization and actual contact with pure technological awesomeness.
Bring it on, geeks. We’re waiting.
