MWC 2013 – Where mobile and history meet face to face

Adrian Tudor

Mobile, meet world. World, meet mobile. All under the amber Catalonian sky where the shy are given the chance to shine and the great can become greater.

With less than a week away from the world’s biggest mobile event of the year, we’re rubbing our palms in anticipation of what’s going to be unveiled at MWC. Will someone pull a new ,,Steve Jobs” out of the hat? Will there be a new mobile device that changes the face of mobile? What partnerships will be forged, what friendships will be tested at MWC? Who knows? But just like Game of Thrones, MWC will be filled with plot twists and surprises.

Being one of the primary melting pots of the mobile world much like CES, MWC is the place where marketers, social media consultants, developers, visionaries and innovators can draw new borders in the mobile world.

But this year promises some serious changes from last year, and we’re not just talking about a different haircut here or a different event location.

Sadly, this year Google decided it’s going to have a minimal presence. No more slides, no Android pins, no Android shaped cookies and most likely no Android robots that dance samba with you.

We’re going to miss you tasty Android smoothie.

The reasons for this? We could give plenty. From hosting company sponsored events, that are smaller, better controlled and organized to a more specific message. Google has achieved market dominance, so some may argue that their absence from MWC 2013 will actually mean that Google has made their point with Android.

And it doesn’t just stop at Google. Let’s line up a few details about MWC 2013:

  • Apple continues to take part in the MWC only in spirit and won’t make an appearance.
  • Mozilla’s Firefox OS will soon have its first hardware through two models named Keon and Peak.
  • On the public conference agenda, Facebook won’t shy away and we’re going to see two of their execs on stage.
  • MWC may be the spot where we’ll meet the Lumia Windows Phone with a full-on, 41 megapixel PureView sensor.
  • If Asus made a phone that could power a tablet, this year they’ll step it up a notch and make their own tablet that can make phone calls.
  • Over 300 conferences given by senior executives from companies such as AT&T, Vodafone, Ericsson, Nokia, Telefonia, Mozilla, Dropbox, etc.
  • The largest gathering of mobile developers to this day, over 12 000 mobile devs.
  • New gadget presentations like the innovative Nokia 808 PureView, the quad-core-powered LG Optimus 4X HD and the new One line by HTC
  • The App Planet is going to be bigger, stronger and geekier than ever this year, breaking all records of attendees and meetings.

A small fraction of details in a sea of possibilities. Part of the beauty of MWC is that startups and new players will get much more breathing room to expand their niche and pitch their vision to hundreds of companies from more than 200 different countries.

There will be plenty of press to cover it and then some, approximately 3000 members getting the scoop on everything that moves.

From conferences, seminars, workshops, showcases, presentations, you name it, next week we’ll stand right in the middle of how mobile history is written.

And we won’t miss it for the world. Appscend’s going to be there with bells on and also the winner of our January contest.

We’re also proud that we’re going to take part in the TechCrunch Mobile Barcelona Meetup, where we’ll compete with seven other startups to see who goes on stage and makes his pitch.

So fingers crossed fellow Appscenders, we’re going with cookies and hope to bring home even tastier ones.

If you’re going there, be sure to check us out in stand Hall 6, stand 6E66. I know what you’re thinking, but someone had to get that spot in the end and it’s better if it’s us. That way we’ll bless the spot with our cookies, charm and awesome mobile apps.

And fret not if you’re not going. After we’re back home we’re going to write away every turning point, all the juicy stuff and innovative gadgets so you won’t miss out on anything.
