How cross platform tools are shaping mobile development, Part I

cross platform tools

Or how can a beaver with a red cap shoulder developer efforts?

When talking about mobile development we’re already talking about high costs and long development times. In response to such dilemmas, cross platform tools help developers create applications for multiple mobile platforms and reduce costs and save time. Sounds good right? I

It is, they can do a lot of things and that will be the today’s subject.

As hardware proliferation progresses, software has to keep up the pace without sacrificing functionality and quality. In this context, cross platform tools have been created not as a crutch but as a power tool to help developers compete in an ever more dynamic digital environment.

CPT’s such as PhoneGap, Mono, RunRev, and dozens of others are aiding mobile application devs in entering a brave new world of time-energy saving development strategies.

And this is just the tip of the iceberg, for among the plethora of positive ramifications, CPT’s will affect, provide and realise the following:

  • An answer to fragmentation, be it market, platforms or mobile architecture
  • Efficiency vs. quality – no longer opposite concepts but will imply each other
  • The emergence of new standards for developers as well as end-clients
  • Reduce the risk of the OBO syndrome (Obsolete before operational)
  • Lower costs in developing applications, regardless of class/target
  • Help devs in establishing a stronger relationship with clients
  • Skyrocket the ability to increase brand awareness, prestige and high-margin results

As said before, these are merely a fraction of the total amount of ramifications CPT’s will have in the mobile industry. They cannot be underestimated nor easily overlooked and their worth cannot be measured in peanuts.

1. Answer to fragmentation : In a heavily fragmented market, developers have a hard time reaching out to as many users as possible with just one platform. Extending to other platforms costs time and effort and often means high-risk low-margin initiatives. Adopting CPT’s will result not only in a higher userbase but will provide devs a cost-effective solution to their businesses.

2. Efficiency vs. quality : Creating high quality products takes time and in a fast changing digital world, time also means product relevance. Instead of sacrificing quality in the name of efficiency, CPT’s will allow devs to design&create in a much shorter amount of time and as such give them the blessed option to refine product quality and virtues.

3. Emergence of new standards : As development speed decreases and quality increases , public mindset will benchmark greater expectations of both devs and enriched products.

4. Reducing the risk of OBO syndrome : Constructing an app is no easy thing while having a sprawl of competition. Whether it is about updating or adapting to changes in various OS, one of the risks devs face is that an app may loose its critical-relevance-point if they do not meet the implied deadline.

5. Lowered costs in developing applications : Self descriptive. CPT’s=better development means = more expensive cookies at office parties

6. Help devs establish stronger relationships with clients : If the road from constructing an application to delivering it to a client can be traveled in the shortest stretch possible, business relationships will move to a higher degree of trust and reliability.

7. Skyrocket the ability to increase brand awareness, prestige and high-margin results : In delivering faster content and products, developers aid companies in increasing their profits and visibility.. It’s a synergetic relationship leading to financial results and eye opener reactions from the end-user.

So what’s the bottom line? The heartof the matter cannot be overstated : Cross-platform-tools will play a pivotal role in shaping the mobile market, the war of the mobile ecosystems and expand boundaries in every sector.

Not bad for all in a day’s work from a fuzzy beaver.
